Plot summary
Alonso Quixano is a hidalgo whose head has been turned by tales of chivalry; he believes himself to be a knight, Don Quixote de La Mancha. He rides out to live the adventures he has read about, and Sancho Panza, a simple farmer, becomes his squire. The two travel together through the adventures he imagines, rescuing dames in distress and fighting giants among other perils in acts he holds to be honorable. Don Quixote longs to be with lady Dulcinea, the love of his life, while Sancho follows him hoping to be rewarded with an island where he is to be governor.

- In the 1970s director Peter Yates was attached to a Don Quixote film written by Waldo Salt that would have starred Richard Burton as Quixote and Peter O'Toole as Sancho Panza; the film was never produced.
- Peter Yates had not worked in television since the 1960s and was persuaded to try it again by his friend John Frankenheimer, who told him TV could be fun if he took the same care as with feature films.
