Plot summary
Plumbers Mario and Luigi work in Brooklyn, where the construction company of their rival Anthony Scapelli is taking their customers. Luigi becomes friendly with Daisy, an archaeology student at New York University who has been digging up dinosaur bones beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. When Scapelli's men leave the water pipes open in the tunnels, the brothers repair them, but two henchmen named Iggy and Spike arrive and carry Daisy off, along with other girls they mistook for her, among them Mario's girlfriend Daniella. Iggy and Spike answer to Koopa, who rules the parallel dimension of Dinohattan, a city running short of water. Mario and Luigi cross the portal between the worlds to bring Daisy back.

- Producers hired screenwriters Ed Solomon and Ryan Rowe to provide a more family-friendly script with more restrained effects requirements, without informing directors Morton and Jankel or the already-signed cast.
- Asked in 2007 for the worst choice of his acting career, Hoskins named Super Mario Bros., calling the whole experience a nightmare; he and Leguizamo got drunk before each day of filming and continued to drink between takes.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Keaton both turned down the villain role, and Tom Hanks was dropped from consideration for the other lead after recent box-office flops.
- Hopper, who played King Koopa, said he was supposed to go down there for five weeks and was there for seventeen as the production ran so far over budget, calling the movie a nightmare.
- The most advanced dinosaur puppet used seventy cables and nine operators to move and cost half a million dollars, impressing visiting Jurassic Park producers.
