Plot summary

Nina Conti is a ventriloquist known internationally and has been credited with reinventing the form. She learned the craft from Ken Campbell, an eccentric and widely respected figure in British theater who was her mentor and, for a time, her lover. When he dies, she takes the puppets he used on a pilgrimage. Their destination is Venthaven, a resting place for puppets whose ventriloquists have died. Along the way she gets to know her traveling companions, some of them made of latex and some of wood, and through their voices she works through the loss of Ken and the career he set her on.
