Plot summary
The National Mirror is a tabloid that reports on unexplained phenomena. Its editor, Vartan Malt, receives a tip about a woman in a small Iowa town who lives with an angel, and sends three staff members to look into it: Frank Quinlan; Huey Driscoll, a photographer who owns the paper's star, Sparky the Wonder Dog; and Dorothy Winters, an angel expert. At Pansy Milbank's boarding house they meet her tenant Michael, who has wings and a cookie-like smell but also smokes, drinks beer and loves sugar. Michael says he is an archangel, and Pansy boasts that he defeated Lucifer in the War in Heaven. He explains that archangels are given missions from God and are not barred from the pleasures of physical incarnation.
