Plot summary
In the early 1800s, Becky Sharp, the child of a painter and a singer, has grown up poor. She finishes her studies and takes a position as governess to the daughters of Sir Pitt Crawley. Before she goes, she stays in London with her friend Amelia Sedley and sets about charming Amelia's brother Jos, a trader who lives in India. Jos is taken with her and comes close to proposing, until Amelia's fiancé George Osborne reminds him that Becky brings no dowry. With no rich husband in reach, Becky takes up her post, dismayed by the house and by her employer, and teaches his daughters while getting the rooms ready for his half-sister, Miss Crawley.

- Robert Pattinson had a small but important role as Becky Sharp's grown-up son in Vanity Fair, but he only learned his scenes had been cut when he watched the film at its premiere. He later revealed the discovery himself.
- Vanity Fair had a budget of $23 million and was meant to spend 18 weeks in pre-production, but Reese Witherspoon's pregnancy forced both pre-production and filming to be sped up.
- Mira Nair scrapped most of the original screenplay after joining the project in 2002 and brought in Julian Fellowes to rewrite it; both agreed Becky Sharp should be made more sympathetic than in Thackeray's novel.
