Plot summary
Pink's father is killed defending the Anzio beachhead in World War II, and his overbearing mother raises him. As a boy he finds relics of his father's military service, including cartridges, and at school a teacher humiliates him for writing poems. He grows into a rock star, burnt out from the music business and performing only with the help of drugs, his marriage in trouble as his career rises. His mother's overprotectiveness follows him into adulthood. On tour in the United States he lies motionless in his hotel room in Los Angeles, isolated from everyone by the wall he has built.

- Geldof's manager pitched him the role during a taxi ride to an airport, and Geldof spent the journey rejecting the offer and expressing his contempt for the project, unaware that the driver was Waters' brother, who then told Waters what Geldof thought.
- Geldof really cut his hand on the Venetian blinds while filming the destruction of a hotel room, and that footage stayed in; the crew also found he could not swim.
- The film's fictional crossed-hammers symbol, invented purely for the story, was later adopted for real by the white supremacist group the Hammerskins.
