Plot summary
Michael Burgess teaches history at a small college in Sayeville, North Carolina, and he has written a fact-based novel about the American Revolution. Hollywood buys the rights, and a production comes to town to shoot it, bringing the actors Elliott James and Faith Healy. Michael's excitement fades as the scriptwriter Stanley Gould and the director Bo Hodges reshape his book into a steamy story of lust and betrayal and add nudity and distortions of history. He also contends with his mother Cecelia, who is certain the Devil lives in her kitchen, and with his girlfriend Gretchen, who is talking about commitment. Michael is drawn to Faith and believes she is like the character she plays.
