Plot summary
Jack Dodds, a butcher in south London, has died, leaving instructions that his ashes be scattered at sea off Margate, the town where he had hoped to retire with his wife Amy. Amy stays behind, telling the others she is making one of her weekly visits to their daughter June, who has learning difficulties and has lived in an institution since shortly after birth. Jack's old friends Ray, a horse race gambler, the former boxer Lenny and the undertaker Vic, along with Jack's son Vince, a dealer in used luxury cars, set out from London by car. Their journey takes in Canterbury Cathedral, the Chatham Naval Memorial and the hop farm where Jack met Amy. Vince was raised by Jack and Amy after his own family died in a wartime bombing.

- Producer Elisabeth Robinson and screenwriter-director Fred Schepisi were preparing a feature film about Don Quixote in 1997 when she brought Graham Swift's novel to his attention; the two acquired the film rights and Schepisi completed the first draft of the script by February 1998.
- Nik Powell, head of the independent production company Scala, signed on as an executive producer and during the summer of 2000 brought in German-based Rainer Mockert and MBP to help with the financing; principal photography began that October and lasted nine weeks.
- The film won the National Board of Review Award for Best Acting by an Ensemble, and Helen Mirren won the London Film Critics Circle Award for Best British Supporting Actress.
