Plot summary
Felicia, an Irish teenager, is pregnant by Johnny Lysaght, who has gone to England to join the British Army. She takes a ferry across and hunts through Birmingham for the lawnmower factory where she believes he works. She encounters Joseph Hilditch, who oversees the catering at a factory and who is the son of an eccentric television chef from decades ago. He cooks his mother's recipes and watches recordings of her old programs, and he keeps a collection of material about her. Hilditch offers to help Felicia find Johnny and drives her toward the factory, telling her that he is on his way to visit his wife.
