Victor Sen Yung
Biography
Victor Sen Yung was an American character actor who became best known for his roles in the Charlie Chan films and Bonanza. Born in San Francisco, he made his first significant screen appearance in Charlie Chan in Honolulu (1938) as Jimmy Chan, the detective's number two son, and played that character in eleven Charlie Chan films through 1942. He earned critical acclaim as Ong Chi Seng in The Letter (1940), and during World War II he took Japanese roles, including Across the Pacific (1942). After service in the U.S. Army Air Forces, he returned to Hollywood and the Chan series, billed as Victor Sen Young, and appeared in Dangerous Money (1946). From 1959 to 1973 he played Hop Sing, the cook on Bonanza, in 107 episodes. He also appeared in Bachelor Father and Kung Fu, and wrote The Great Wok Cookbook in 1974. He died in 1980.

A change of course
During World War II, Sen Yung joined the U.S. Army Air Forces, and his military obligations kept him from rejoining the Charlie Chan series at once. Monogram Pictures told him he could work there once his tour of duty ended.

Sen Yung was a skilled chef who often showed up on cooking programs. In 1974, he wrote The Great Wok Cookbook.
