Plot summary
A police convention brings Charlie Chan to New York, where Inspector Vance and, to his surprise, his number two son, Jimmy, meet him at the airport. On the flight he had met his old Scotland Yard friend Hugh Drake, now in military intelligence, who was hunting a sabotage ring. The next day Chan visits Drake at the apartment of George Kirby, president of the Metropolitan Aircraft Corporation, where a dinner party is under way, and finds Drake dead of poison gas in the library. Drake's briefcase, with all he had gathered about the ring, is gone, and the window is latched, so Chan decides that a guest is responsible. Among the guests are the company's chief designer, Ralph Percy, actress June Preston, and Drake's Oxford classmate Herbert Fenton.
