Plot summary
Kentaro Moto travels with a caravan across the Gobi Desert, carrying a scroll that a thief tries to take. When the caravan reaches Peiping, the police search him, but Moto keeps the scroll and slips away. He changes clothes and attends a party that Colonel Tchernov gives for American Eleanor Joyce. There Moto watches Prince Chung leave his mother to speak with Tchernov, who offers to buy the Chung family's heirloom scrolls. Prince Chung refuses. Moto later asks to see the scrolls, and Chung explains that the seven scrolls point the way to Genghis Khan's long-lost tomb. One scroll, lent to an exhibition, has been stolen. Other treasure hunters are also after the set, and Moto works to keep the scrolls from them.
