Trailer

Plot summary

Frank Johnson, an artist in San Francisco, watches a gangster shoot a trial witness and then turn the gun on him. Inspector Martin Ferris arrives and learns that Frank alone could pick the killer out of a lineup, so the police hold him for his own safety. A glimpse of bullet holes in his own shadow on a wall sends Frank into a panic, and he slips away. Eleanor, his wife, tells Ferris that the marriage is strained and that her husband has always run from trouble. Danny Legget, a reporter, offers to help her look, and Eleanor sets out across the city in search of Frank while police officers follow her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Woman on the Run (1950)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Ann Sheridan, who had a great fear of roller coasters dating back to a childhood accident at an amusement park, took eight full rides on the Ocean Park Pier roller coaster in Santa Monica while filming the amusement park and roller coaster scenes.
  • Ann Sheridan was paid $150,000 and negotiated a large share of the film's profits, and Twentieth Century-Fox paid Fidelity Pictures $50,000 to delay production so that she could finish work on Stella first.
  • A pristine print of the film found in Universal's vault in 2003 was destroyed in the 2008 Universal lot fire, and the film was thought lost until its negative and soundtrack were found at the British Film Institute; the Film Noir Foundation and Hollywood Foreign Press Association then funded a complete restoration by the UCLA Film and Television Archive.
  • According to film noir historian Eddie Muller, much of the dialogue was improvised, a rarity for the era, and no continuity script was ever completed.
