Plot summary
Gilbert De Quincey is an adventurer and an opium addict, and a descendant of Thomas De Quincey. In 1902 San Francisco, the editor of a Chinese newspaper hires him to halt the auctions of trafficked Chinese women, who are being sold as brides to Chinese men living in the United States. The community is split over the trade. Some see it as the only means by which overseas Chinese men can obtain brides; others consider it indecent.
