Soo Yong
Biography
Soo Yong was a Chinese-American actress whose screen work included 23 Hollywood films and many television programs, mostly in supporting roles. Born in Kahului, she studied at the University of Hawaii and earned a master's degree in education from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1927. On Broadway she acted in several plays, including one with Katherine Cornell, and later said she borrowed Cornell's techniques and gestures. In 1930 she served as onstage translator for Mei Lanfang's Peking Opera during its North American tour, earning praise from the New York Times for her clear English diction. She made her film debut as an amah in The Painted Veil (1934). Her notable screen roles included the cruel aunt in The Good Earth (1937) and parts in Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955) and Sayonara (1957). In the late 1930s she created a series of solo stage works that introduced Chinese culture to American theatergoers.
