Phyllis Brooks
Biography
Phyllis Brooks was an American actress and model who began as a model before moving into films. Born in Boise, Idaho, she worked for two years as a model and became known as the Ipana Toothpaste Girl. Initially billed as Mary Brooks, she started her film career in 1934 at age 20 in I've Been Around. Over about 30 performances, she was a B-movie leading lady in the 1930s and 1940s, appearing in In Old Chicago (1938), Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938), the Charlie Chan series with Sidney Toler, and The Shanghai Gesture (1941). She also appeared on Broadway in productions such as Panama Hattie, Stage Door, Round Trip, and The Night Before Christmas. During World War II, she made a USO tour of the Pacific theater, the first civilian woman to do so, accompanied by Gary Cooper and with actress Una Merkel.
