Plot summary
Mary Whitman is staying at a Reno hotel that serves guests who have come to end their marriages. A fellow guest is murdered, and Mary is arrested on suspicion of the killing. Other guests at the hotel had reasons to want the victim gone. Curtis Whitman, her soon-to-be ex-husband, asks Charlie Chan to take the case, and Chan leaves Honolulu for Reno. There he talks with Sheriff Tombstone Fletcher, an older lawman who is not up to date on modern police methods. Chan's son Jimmy, driving to Reno to meet his father, offers a lift to hitch-hikers who take his car and strip him to his underwear, then strand him in the middle of nowhere; picked up for vagrancy, he turns up in a police lineup.
