Plot summary
Nick Cooper is an American singer who has been away from recording for six years, since his marriage to Gail. He flies from New York to London to make a new album for his manager, Webster Jones. Gail goes to his apartment to collect possessions and a caller asks her about the divorce and about when Nick will record again. Someone in a hag mask and a lace shawl attacks her there. Nick learns nothing of this. He takes a house in the Surrey countryside, where the housekeeper Mrs. B and the gardener Mr. B look after the place, and he grows close to Webster's secretary, Linda Everett. He works on the album, but begins to see Gail at the house and to hear noises he cannot account for.
