Plot summary

A planetary alignment that comes once every five thousand years is approaching, and the secret society known as the Illuminati, led by Manfred Powell, wants the Triangle of Light, an ancient object able to control time. The two halves of the Triangle must be reunited before the alignment ends. Lara Croft, who lives in her family manor with her technical assistant Bryce and her butler Hillary, collects artifacts from ruins around the world. Her father, Lord Richard Croft, believed dead for years, appears to her in a dream, and she finds a strange clock hidden in the house. A letter from him explains that the clock is the key, and that the halves lie in a tomb at Angkor and a ruined city in Siberia. He asks her to find and destroy them before the Illuminati do.

  • Parts of the film were shot at Cambodia's Ta Prohm temple in Angkor, making it the first major motion picture filmed in Cambodia since Lord Jim in 1964, after the country's occupation by the Khmer Rouge.
  • Paramount had editor Stuart Baird re-cut the film and promised him the directing job on Star Trek: Nemesis in exchange for re-editing both the 130-minute cut of this film and John Woo's 210-minute cut of Mission: Impossible 2.
  • Michael Kamen's completed score was rejected once the film was re-edited, and Graeme Revell was then brought in and had to compose sixty minutes of music inside ten days.
  • The first screenplay version, by Brent V. Friedman, pitched the film as a hard R-rated action horror full of gore and female nudity, using the Egyptian Book of the Dead; it was rejected, mostly over budget concerns.
  • A later rejected script by Sara B. Cooper had Lara Croft trying to stop the "8th Wonder of the World" during a planetary alignment, and included alien creatures plus Lara being impregnated by one.
  • Once cast, Angelina Jolie had input into the script, adding the entire background between Lara Croft and her father, and she and Jon Voight wrote their scenes together.
  • Neve Campbell turned down the role of Lara Croft because of her commitments to the television series Party of Five.
  • Eidos Interactive demanded no nude or sex scenes with Lara Croft, and cuts were still made to Angelina Jolie's nude scenes to get the film a PG-13 rating.
