Plot summary
An abandoned sailboat drifts into New York Harbor, and when harbor patrolmen board it a zombie attacks them. The boat belongs to the father of Anne Bowles, who tells the police he was doing research on Matool, a Caribbean island. Journalist Peter West is following the story, and he learns that her father had fallen ill there. The two hire a boat and its guides, Brian Hull and Susan Barrett, to reach the island. On Matool, Dr. David Menard and his wife Paola study why the dead there rise and attack the living. Paola wants to leave; Menard refuses to abandon his work as the group sails toward the island.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Zombie (1979)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The shark-attack scene in Zombi 2 was devised by producer Ugo Tucci and shot without director Lucio Fulci's approval by Giannetto De Rossi, in Isla Mujeres, with a local shark trainer playing the zombie.
- Zombi 2 was greenlit and financed by producer Fabrizio De Angelis as an unofficial sequel to George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead because Italian copyright law allows any film to be marketed as a sequel to another work.
- The BBFC cut 1 minute and 46 seconds from Zombi 2 to earn an X rating for its UK release on 2 January 1980, and it was later classed a "video nasty" under the Obscene Publications Act, a de facto ban later used to publicise its home video releases.
- Several Zombi 2 actors had contracts promising trailers for the duration of production, but none were there when filming started and only Richard Johnson managed to convince the producers to provide one.
- Enzo G. Castellari was offered the directing job on Zombi 2 but turned it down, feeling he was not the right director for a horror film; Lucio Fulci then became producer Fabrizio De Angelis' second choice, hired for his handling of violent scenes in Sette note in nero and Don't Torture a Duckling.
- Lucio Fulci claimed not to know that his film carried the title Zombi 2 to tie it in with Dawn of the Dead, and was very displeased with his inability to protest the film's distribution.
- Fabio Frizzi's "Seq. 6", the cue he composed for Zombi 2's eye-gouging scene, was inspired by the melody of the Beatles' 1967 song "A Day in the Life".
- The video games Dead Island (2011) and Dead Island: Riptide (2013) took inspiration from Zombi 2, both following a group of people trying to escape a zombie outbreak on a tropical island.
