Plot summary
Srinivasa Ramanujan takes menial work at the edge of poverty in Madras. His employers, who are college-educated, see that his mathematical insights exceed the tasks they hand him, and they urge him to send his writings to university professors. One letter reaches G. H. Hardy, a mathematician at Cambridge, who takes a special interest and invites him to England to test what he can do. Ramanujan accepts, though it means leaving his wife Janaki behind for an extended period, and he promises to keep up their correspondence. At Cambridge he encounters racial prejudice, and life in England proves harder to adjust to than he expected. Hardy is impressed by his abilities but concerned about how little experience Ramanujan has in writing proofs, and he works to have his results accepted by a major journal.
