Paul Henreid
Biography
Paul Henreid was an Austrian-born actor and filmmaker who became an American citizen, trained for the theater in Vienna, and worked in German-language stage and film productions before moving to Britain and the United States. He appeared in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939) and Night Train to Munich (1940), then signed with RKO and moved on to Warner Bros. His best-known roles came in 1942: Jerry Durrance opposite Bette Davis in Now, Voyager (1942) and the resistance leader Victor Laszlo in Casablanca (1942). Other credits included Between Two Worlds (1944) and The Spanish Main (1945). After the war he took mostly independent film roles and worked in Europe, returning to Hollywood in 1954 for Deep in My Heart (1954). He also directed films and television and acted in Operation Crossbow (1965) and The Madwoman of Chaillot (1969), his last screen role being in Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977). He received two Hollywood Walk of Fame stars in 1960.

About the name
RKO dropped the "von" from Henreid's name to make it sound less Germanic when he signed with the studio in 1940.
