Plot summary
Jo Armitage has seven children. She leaves her second husband and marries Jake, a successful screenwriter. Her psychiatrist asks about her many pregnancies and suggests she uses childbirth to justify sex to herself. Signs gather that Jake has affairs. Philpot, a young woman who once lived with the family, faints into his arms, and Jo's children tell her. Jo questions Jake, and he reacts unconvincingly.
