Plot summary
The writer Gerald Kingsland places an advertisement in a London newspaper, seeking a woman to live with him for a year on a deserted tropical island. Lucy Irvine, twenty-five, replies, and from more than fifty applicants he selects her. The two meet at dinner, and they marry to satisfy immigration rules before traveling to Tuin, an isolated, uninhabited island in the Torres Strait, which lies between New Guinea and Australia. Gerald is forty-nine. Once they are living on Tuin, the year proves far less idyllic than the movies suggest, and Lucy is the one with the will to last it out.
