Plot summary
Bruno is eight and lives in Berlin with his mother Elsa, his elder sister Gretel and his father Ralf, an SS officer whose promotion moves the family to a house in the countryside. From his bedroom window Bruno sees a camp and takes it for a farm, and his mother forbids him the back garden. Herr Liszt, a private tutor, home schools the children, and Pavel, a doctor who now serves the household, treats a minor injury Bruno suffers. Bruno's walks in the nearby woods bring him to a barbed wire fence, where he meets Shmuel, a Jewish boy his age who was brought to the camp with his parents. The two boys keep meeting there, and Bruno sneaks Shmuel food.
