Raymond Huntley

Biography

Raymond Huntley was an English actor who worked in British films and on stage from the 1920s to the 1970s. He was born in 1904 in Kings Norton, which was then part of Worcestershire and is now within Birmingham. His stage career began at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1922, and he made his London debut two years later. He took over the role of Count Dracula in Hamilton Deane's touring production, later declining to play it on Broadway, though he toured the United States in the part from 1928 to 1930. After his Broadway debut in 1931, he appeared often in the West End. On screen he was frequently cast as an authority figure or bureaucrat. His films included The Way Ahead. He also appeared in The Dam Busters. On television he became known as Sir Geoffrey Dillon in Upstairs, Downstairs. He died in 1990.
