Plot summary
John Harman runs a bookstore on Oxford Street, where he reprimands Ruby Bruce, the clerk, for arriving late. That same day Ruby catches Jeff Hart, an ex-convict, trying to steal a rare book. She does not turn him in; she agrees to a date with him. Working late the following evening, Ruby initiates a kiss with Harman, who answers it for a moment and then pulls away, horrified by his own behavior. Ruby tells Hart what happened. He talks her into blackmailing Harman and strikes her arm to raise a bruise, so that she can claim Harman caused it. Harman refuses to pay what the pair demand.
