Plot summary
Passengers changing trains at Fal Vale Junction in Cornwall discover that no Truro-bound train remains. Tommy Gander, a music hall comedian, Teddy Deakin, Jackie and Richard Winthrop, Herbert and his fiancée Edna, Miss Bourne and the tippling Dr. Sterling must spend the night in the station as rain falls. Saul Hodgkin, the stationmaster, is locking up and says they cannot stay, then warns them the place is haunted. He speaks of a swing bridge that once carried a branch line over the river beside the station: forty-three years before, the stationmaster of that time, Ted Holmes, suffered a fatal heart attack while trying to close the bridge, and a train fell into the river. Ever since, Hodgkin says, a phantom train has been heard on the disused track, and it kills anyone who looks at it.
