Plot summary
Released after serving time for embezzlement, Marcus Pendleton finds that business now runs on computers. Looking for an angle, he persuades the programmer Caesar Smith to pursue a lifelong dream of hunting in the Amazon rainforest, then takes his identity. At the London offices of Tacanco, an American conglomerate, he deceives executive vice president Carlton Klemper while vice president Willard Gnatpole is suspicious of him. The company computer system lets him send claim checks to himself under aliases across Europe, among them the composers Claude Debussy and Gioachino Rossini. He marries Patty, a secretary with no aptitude and a frustrated flautist, and now faces the problem of hiding his money.
