Naunton Wayne
Biography
Naunton Wayne, a Welsh character actor, was born in Pontypridd. He began on the London stage during the 1930s. His early appearances included Streamline at the Palace and 1066 and All That at the Strand, where he provided comic continuity. Wise Tomorrow at the Lyric gave him his first full role, Norman Weldon, in 1937. For four years at the Strand he played Mortimer Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace. In 1949 he appeared at the Savoy in Young Wives' Tale, and from late 1956 he was in The Bride and the Bachelor, a long-running farce at the Duchess. His screen fame rested on Caldicott in The Lady Vanishes (1938), a supporting part he repeated in three more films with Basil Radford as Charters. Their joint credits included Night Train to Munich (1940), Dead of Night (1945), and Passport to Pimlico (1949). Wayne also made Obsession (1949) and the Ealing comedy The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953). He died in 1970.
