Hermione Baddeley

Biography

Hermione Baddeley was an English actress of theater, film and television who was typically cast as brash, blowsy characters. Born in Broseley, Shropshire, she made an early West End appearance in 1923 in Charles McEvoy's play The Likes of Her and found her milieu in revue from the 1930s to the 1950s. She had a long professional association with Noël Coward and appeared in many of his plays during the 1940s and 1950s, most successfully Fallen Angels with Hermione Gingold. Her films included Brighton Rock (1948), Passport to Pimlico (1949), Scrooge (1951), The Belles of St Trinian's (1954), Mary Poppins (1964) and The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964). She also did voice work in The Aristocats (1970) and The Secret of NIMH (1982). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Room at the Top (1958) and a Tony for The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore in 1963, winning a Golden Globe in 1975 for Maude.
