Dennis Price
Biography
Dennis Price was an English actor who moved between the stage, radio, television and film. Born in Ruscombe, Berkshire, he trained as an actor and made his first stage appearance with a repertory company in Croydon in 1937, followed by a London debut in Richard II. His first film role came in A Canterbury Tale (1944), and Gainsborough Pictures put him under contract, often casting him as villains in melodramas. He reached stardom as the suave serial murderer Louis Mazzini in Ealing's Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), playing opposite Alec Guinness. Later he appeared in Dear Murderer (1947), Tunes of Glory (1960), Victim (1961), What a Carve Up! (1961) and The Earth Dies Screaming (1964). He also played Jeeves in the BBC series The World of Wooster and appeared in horror films such as Twins of Evil (1971) and Theatre of Blood (1973). He died in 1973.

A role that slipped away
In 1959, Price played the original "No. 1" who commanded the crew of HMS Troutbridge on the first series of the radio comedy The Navy Lark. Other work commitments stopped him from staying on, so Stephen Murray took over the part.

Price's stage debut came at the Croydon Repertory Theatre in June 1937. That was followed by a London debut in Richard II at the Queen's Theatre on 6 September 1937.
