Plot summary
In Oakley Park, a town near London, Molly Stevens plays tennis at the local club, where the men ogle her and the women dislike her. She is later found strangled with a stocking. The local police ask Scotland Yard for help, and Superintendent Mike Halloran is sent to investigate. The residents resent an outsider looking into their affairs. In Molly's flat he finds a book of love poems inscribed by Peter Crowley and a photograph of several men with Molly and Fiona Dixon. Fiona's father, Charles Dixon, is shocked that his daughter knew Molly and will not let Halloran question her.
