Margaret Rutherford
Biography
Margaret Rutherford was an English actress known for comic character roles. Born in London in 1892, she made her stage debut in 1925 at the Old Vic and first appeared in the West End in 1933. Her performance as Miss Prism in John Gielgud's 1939 production of The Importance of Being Earnest brought critical recognition. She became known in films as Madame Arcati in David Lean's Blithe Spirit (1945). She appeared in Miranda (1948), Passport to Pimlico (1949), The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950), and a 1952 adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest. In the 1960s she played Jane Marple in four George Pollock films drawn from Agatha Christie novels. For The V.I.P.s (1963) she won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in Chimes at Midnight (1965) and A Countess from Hong Kong (1967), and was appointed OBE in 1961 and DBE in 1967.
