Plot summary
A broken leg keeps John Banning outside the tomb of Princess Ananka in Egypt in 1895, so his father and his uncle go in without him. An Egyptian named Mehemet Bey warns them of a curse on anyone who disturbs the tomb, and they enter anyway. They find the princess's sarcophagus. When Stephen reads from the Scroll of Life, the team outside hears him scream and finds him catatonic. Three years later in England, Stephen recovers at the Engerfield Nursing Home and sends for John. He tells his son that the reading brought Kharis back, a high priest entombed alive as the tomb's guardian, and that the mummy will kill all those who opened it. John does not believe him. Mehemet Bey, who worships Karnak, has come to the town under another name to take revenge on the family.

- Nina Wilcox Putnam, who co-wrote the original 1932 Universal Mummy film, protested Hammer's remake in a letter to Time magazine, saying it was made without her knowledge or consent and that at the age of 75 she was shocked to find the work attributed to her.
- Peter Cushing said he suggested the scene in which he drives a spear through the mummy, taking the idea from the pre-release poster, which showed the mummy with a shaft of light passing through it.
SPOILER
The scenes of Kharis's tongue being cut out and of his shotgun demise were originally more graphic, but were trimmed for the British censor.- The Mummy is cited as a particular influence on the Doctor Who serial Pyramids of Mars, made in 1975.
