Hugh Manning

Biography

Hugh Manning was an English actor who worked in film, television and radio and was best known for his long run as the Reverend Donald Hinton in Emmerdale Farm, the soap opera he appeared in from 1977 to 1989. Born in Birmingham in 1920, he attended Moseley Grammar School, began as a trainee accountant and then moved into acting after studying at the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama. On the small screen he was in the ITV drama The Sullavan Brothers from 1964 to 1965 and starred with Kathleen Harrison in Mrs Thursday in 1966, playing a suave business adviser who also featured in commercials for Robinsons barley water. He guested twice on The Avengers, as Colonel Watson in 1966 and Max Hardy in 1967, and was a regular as Inspector Vosper in the BBC radio serial Paul Temple. In 1975 he served as president of the actors union Equity, and he died in 2004.
