Biography

Peter Mullan, a Scottish actor and filmmaker, was born in Peterhead in 1959 and grew up in Glasgow. He attended the University of Glasgow, where he began acting on stage, before entering film with early parts in Riff-Raff (1991), Shallow Grave (1994), and Trainspotting (1996). His lead role in My Name Is Joe (1998) won the Best Actor prize at Cannes. As a director, he made Orphans (1998), which took awards at Venice and the Festival du Film de Paris, and The Magdalene Sisters (2002), which won the Golden Lion at Venice and was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best British Film. He also directed Neds (2010), a Golden Shell winner at San Sebastián. He appeared in cult films such as Session 9 (2001), Young Adam (2003), Children of Men (2006), and War Horse (2011), and in television series including Ozark and Westworld. Tyrannosaur (2011) brought him a Sundance jury prize for breakout performances.
