Plot summary
Joe Taylor is a drifter with few words. He takes a job as a hand aboard a coal barge that works the canals between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The barge belongs to Les Gault, who runs it with his wife Ella and their son Jim, and Joe shares their cramped quarters on board. One afternoon Joe and Les find a young woman's body floating in the water and hand it to the police. Whether the death was an accident or a crime is not clear. Les's drinking is straining his marriage to Ella, who is drawn to Joe. As officers investigate, Joe and Ella begin an affair.
