Plot summary
In 1983 John Davidson is twelve and living in Galashiels, in the Scottish Borders, with his family. He wants to become a footballer, and he starts secondary school at Galashiels Academy. The following morning, with a scout due to judge his goalkeeping, he is seized by tics and bursts of swearing at school. The head teacher punishes him with a belt across the hand, and the sore hand spoils his performance for the scout. The outbursts keep causing incidents, and the school tells him to find somewhere else to go. At dinner he spits at his family, and his mother Heather bans him from the table and sends him to eat by the fireplace. His condition puts pressure on his parents' marriage.
