Plot summary
Stevie Logan comes to London from Scotland after a prison term and is sleeping rough when he finds work on a non-union building site, where a derelict hospital is being turned into luxury apartments. Working conditions are poor and several of the men work under false names. Learning that he has nowhere to stay, his workmates Larry, Mo and Shem find him an empty flat on a nearby estate to squat in. Stevie meets Susan, an Irish singer and actress trying to build a career, when he returns a handbag she has lost, and he brings some of the men along to a pub where she performs.
