Plot summary
Eddie Dunford returns from South England and settles into a new job as a cub reporter at the Yorkshire Post. A schoolgirl, Clare Kemplay, has disappeared. Eddie wonders whether her case belongs with others going back six years; the police disagree and put the blame on gypsies. He keeps asking questions, and they stonewall him. After he calls on the widowed mother of a girl who went missing years earlier, two detectives beat him. He also begins an affair with Paula, the widowed mother. Then a child's body is found on a building site owned by the local magnate John Dawson, and Eddie has another thread to follow.
