Plot summary

Years of sleeping rough at motorway service stations have left Hector McAdam far from the family life he once had. In Glasgow for a hospital appointment that will lead to a non-urgent operation in a few weeks, he is recognized by a man who knew him before he disappeared and who says his brother Peter went looking for him. Hector does not want to talk. Later, youths try to take his bag; a shopkeeper drives them off, cleans his cuts and mends the strap. Hector guards the letters he carries. He decides to seek out the siblings he has not seen for fifteen years, beginning with his sister Lizzie in Newcastle, where her husband Derek says Lizzie will not see him. Christmas, he says, will be spent with friends at a London shelter.
