David Morrissey
Biography
David Morrissey is an English actor and filmmaker from the Kensington area of Liverpool. After small parts in film and television through the 1990s, he gained wider attention playing Gordon Brown in The Deal (2003), Stephen Collins in State of Play (2003), The Governor in The Walking Dead from 2012 to 2015, and DCS Ian St Clair in Sherwood from 2022. On stage he performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and at the National Theatre. Among his films are Hilary and Jackie (1998), Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001), Basic Instinct 2 (2006), The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) and Centurion (2010). He directed the television dramas Sweet Revenge (2001) and Passer By (2004), and his first feature as director, the television film Don't Worry About Me (2010), was first broadcast on BBC Two. He was nominated for a British Academy Television Award for State of Play and won a Royal Television Society Best Actor award for The Deal.

Big break
Morrissey won the role of Billy in One Summer after Paul McGann, five years older, decided he was too old to play the 16-year-old and stepped back from the production.
A role that slipped away
In 1998 Morrissey appeared in Our Mutual Friend with Paul McGann. A fan of the book, he asked director Julian Farino to let him play Eugene Wrayburn, but McGann got the role, and Farino wanted him as schoolmaster Bradley Headstone.
Early training
Morrissey developed his filmmaking craft at the Rathbone Theatre Workshop, a Youth Opportunities Programme where Bert Byron taught him to shoot short silent films on Super 8.
Behind the camera
Morrissey's first feature as a director was Don't Worry About Me, about a London boy who falls in love with a Liverpool girl. It was shot in Liverpool in 2007 for £100,000 and premiered at the 2009 London Film Festival.
Getting ready for a role
Morrissey was cast in Finney as the character Sting had first played in Stormy Monday. He landed the part as the first choice and had to learn the double bass.
