Plot summary
Daniel Dillon, an Irish immigrant, settles in the California mountains during the 1849 Gold Rush, where a shack named Kingdom Come stands. By 1867 he owns a vault of gold and the town of Kingdom Come, and nearly every business of consequence in it belongs to him: digging for gold, renting a room, opening a bank account or breaking the law all mean dealing with Dillon. Donald Dalglish, a surveyor for the Central Pacific Railroad, arrives to decide whether the new line runs through Kingdom Come or somewhere nearby, and Dillon wants the railway in his town. Two women travel in with Dalglish, the ailing Elena Burn and her teenage daughter Hope, and their arrival stirs a past Dillon has kept hidden from the town for twenty years.

SPOILER
The town of Kingdom Come was built at the Fortress Mountain Resort in Kananaskis Country, Alberta, and the decision to burn the whole town on screen also served as a first step in the producer's commitment to return the site to its original natural condition.SPOILER
In a scene near the end of the film, as the character of Dillon throws an oil can onto a burning building, the tower, cables and chairs of a modern ski lift can be seen in the background.- The Claim is Michael Nyman's first score for a Western, and as of 2008 his only one; it was also his second collaboration with Michael Winterbottom.
- In the cue "The Shootout," Nyman pays homage to Ennio Morricone's Western scores, layering in material from his own scores for A Zed & Two Noughts and Prospero's Books with a Morricone-style trumpet motif.
