Plot summary
David Stevens is a chartered accountant, Juliet Miller is a physician and Alex Law is a journalist. They share a flat in Edinburgh and need someone to take the fourth room. The three interview applicants with deliberate cruelty, enjoying their discomfort. They offer the room to a man named Hugo. Soon after he moves in, they find him dead in his room, apparently from an overdose. A suitcase full of money lies beside him. The friends decide to keep the money and conceal the death.

- Although the story is set in Edinburgh, the crew shot predominantly in Glasgow because the Glasgow Film Fund gave them a £150,000 grant.

Danny Boyle said on the 2009 Special Edition DVD and 2012 Blu-ray commentary that Alex is not meant to be dead, so a line of Alex greeting the detective was added in post-production to clarify this.
