Plot summary
Frank Redmond has spent his working life as a Glasgow shipbuilder, and when he and several co-workers are laid off, he is left without work and without direction. Grief over a son who drowned years earlier returns, and although he gets on with his wife Joan, the marriage has grown distant. Joan is training to become a bus driver. Their surviving son Rob, a house husband who cares for twin boys while his wife Angela works full time, carries guilt over being the one who lived, and he and his father barely speak. After a panic attack, Frank wants something to aim at, and a booze cruise along the English Channel gives him the idea of swimming across it. His former co-workers Danny, Eddie and Norman, and Chan, who owns a chip shop, train him.
