Oliver Hardy

Biography

Oliver Hardy was an American comic actor who formed one half of the Laurel and Hardy double act with Stan Laurel. He was born in Harlem, Georgia, in 1892. Though he had little interest in formal schooling, he was drawn to music and theater. After managing a movie theater in Milledgeville, he moved to Jacksonville and made his first film, Outwitting Dad, in 1914. In early silent work he usually played the villain or heavy. At Hal Roach Studios he worked on the Our Gang films and with Charley Chase. From 1927 he and Laurel shared the screen, and their series produced many shorts and features, including Unaccustomed as We Are (1929), Brats (1930), The Flying Deuces (1939), A Chump at Oxford (1940) and Saps at Sea (1940). Their 1932 short The Music Box won an Academy Award. He also had a supporting role in The Fighting Kentuckian (1949). Hardy died in 1957.

About the name
Hardy was billed as "Babe Hardy" in many of his later Lubin films, including Back to the Farm in 1914, while his first movie Outwitting Dad credited him as O. N. Hardy.

Between 1916 and 1917, Hardy had a brief directing career. He was credited with directing or co-directing ten shorts, and he acted in all of them.
