Plot summary
During World War I, Stan is ordered to hold a trench in Cootie Avenue, France, while Ollie and the rest of the unit go over the top. The unit is moved many times and never returns; the armistice comes and the men go home. Twenty years on, Stan is still at his post, in worn uniform, eating canned food and unaware the war ended. When a plane passes overhead he fires at it, and the pilot who lands tells him the fighting stopped long ago. Ollie, now married to Mrs. Hardy and kept on a small daily allowance, recognizes Stan's photograph in a newspaper, borrows his wife's car after an elevator accident and sets out to bring his old friend home.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The original script ended with Billy Gilbert seated in his study and Stan and Ollie's heads mounted on his trophy wall; Hal Roach vetoed the idea as "too gruesome", and writer Felix Adler reused the gag at the end of The Three Stooges' 1941 short I'll Never Heil Again.
- The battle scenes at the start of Block-Heads are not new footage: they are recycled from King Vidor's 1925 silent film The Big Parade.
