Plot summary

Burglaries keep happening on Officer Kennedy's beat, and his chief has told him to put a stop to them or face dismissal. Kennedy finds Stanley and Oliver sleeping on a park bench and offers them a deal: they will break into the chief's house, and Kennedy will catch them there in front of his boss, which restores his reputation, and afterward he will fix things so they go free. If they refuse, he threatens them with ninety days in jail for vagrancy. The pair agree to the plan, though they are wary of the risk, and the break-in brings complications.
