Plot summary

Stan and Ollie are away from their fish market work in Des Moines and living in Paris, where Ollie falls hard for Georgette, the innkeeper's daughter. Georgette is already married to Francois, a Foreign Legion officer, and turns Ollie down. Dejected, Ollie considers drastic measures until Stan's talk of reincarnation gives him pause. Francois suggests the Legion as a cure for a broken heart, so the two men enlist and trade Paris for a training camp. Their duties are menial, their pay is meager, and their resistance to the work leaves them sentenced to a mountain of laundry that seems to belong to the whole Legion.

Director A. Edward Sutherland and Stan Laurel did not get along while making the film; Sutherland reportedly said he would rather eat a tarantula than work with Laurel again.
The Flying Deuces is one of only two Laurel and Hardy feature films in the public domain, the other being Atoll K.
The original release included a scene with an escaped shark, a model fin pulled back and forth in the river Stan and Ollie plan to jump into, but the scene was removed from some releases.
The laundry scene was shot on the Iverson Movie Ranch in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, where a facsimile of a huge pile of laundry was built on top of a giant sandstone boulder in Iverson's Garden of the Gods, now a park.
Aerial footage of the laundry hanging on lines, shot for the film, was reused in later productions, including the Republic serials Manhunt of Mystery Island (1945) and Radar Patrol vs. Spy King (1949) and Allied Artists' The Cyclops (1957).
